Part 12: Gray Muzzles Welcome – Why Senior Dogs Need More Than Just a Kennel
Share
Concrete floors are hard on old joints. Here is how we pamper our senior guests.
Puppies get all the attention, but senior dogs are the soul of the pack. They have different needs: they sleep more, their joints ache, and they often have complex medication schedules.
A traditional kennel with cold concrete runs or a loud, chaotic environment can be physically painful for an arthritic dog.
At Atlas Paws, we believe your dog’s golden years should be filled with comfort, not confinement.
1. Orthopedic Comfort
- The Kennel Standard: Often a raised cot in a run with a concrete floor. It’s sanitary, but cold.
- The Atlas Paws Standard: We have couches, plush rugs, and orthopedic beds (we use Kuranda dog beds). Because we are cage-free, your senior dog can choose the softest spot in the room (usually a human lap) to rest their bones.
2. Meds Management (No Extra Fees)
As dogs age, the pill organizer fills up. Thyroid meds, pain management, insulin...
- The Hidden Cost: Many facilities charge $5–$10 per administration. If your dog takes meds twice a day, that adds $140 to a week-long stay.
- The Atlas Paws Way: Administering medication is part of caring for a dog. We never charge extra for it. Our staff is trained to administer oral and topical medications gently and accurately.
3. The "3 AM Potty" Reality
As bladder control weakens with age, senior dogs often can't hold it for 12 hours overnight.
- The "Lock and Leave" Problem: In a standard kennel, they are forced to soil their crate if no staff is present overnight. This is humiliating for a house-trained dog.
- The Atlas Paws Solution: Because our staff is awake 24/7, if an older dog stands up and looks restless at 3 AM, we let them out immediately. They maintain their dignity and their house training.
Respect for the Elders
We treat your senior dog with the patience and tenderness they have earned.
